True Facts About Sittong
Most of
the travellers are confused about the fact that Sittong is a Single Village
which has upper and lower places named Upper Sittong and lower Sittong
respectively, but this is not true. Sittong is a fairly large
area which comprises of three Panchayats and each Panchayat has several
villages. Actually Sittong is a cluster of villages located in Darjeeling
District and part of Kurseong Sub-division which is known as Sittong Khasmahal. Altitude of Sittong
varies, different villages have different altitudes.
Sittong
has become famous among tourists as it is the heart of the orange-growing
countryside of Darjeeling hills, but has managed to keep itself serene and most
of the villages are untouched by vices of modern tourism. You will get
different types of accommodation such as hotels like homestays to real homestays
in different villages with all the basic amenities that are enough for the
nature lovers. The place is also quite close to NJP / Bagdogra arrival point
which makes it a convenient start or end point of your tour.
There are
no shopping or dining opportunities near the villages. The nearest town is Kurseong
which takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes approximately.
Here you
can admire the beauty of various Himalayan peaks and enjoy the mesmerising
Sunrise. You can also enjoy beautiful Cinchona plantations, Teesta River, Riyang
River, jungle trails, low altitude treks, monastery, various species of birds,
wild animals and butterflies which is a paradise for wildlife photographers.
Apart from that, you get to enjoy the main attraction of the place, that is,
the orange gardens.
